Welcome to my blokus strategy blog.

The purpose of this blog is to get some Blokus: C2 strategy literature available for players who are looking for tips, and also to be a basis for a blokus strategy book I dream of writing one day.  This site is dedicated to the classic version of blokus, played by 2 players only (C2).

I also plan to post regular or semi-regular blokus puzzles for you to play with. The puzzles appear here. The best way to attempt the puzzles is with the amazing (free!) blokus software pentobi. The project site for pentobi is here. You can skip right to the pentobi downloads section here. (Update May 2015: I haven’t been posting puzzles for a while due to the demands of completing my PhD, but now that I’m done, you will start to see more of these again!)

Even though the site is intended for beginners, I will occasionally discuss more advanced topics as well.  When they show up, I promise to file them appropriately so that you know what type of post you are reading before you start.

BEFORE YOU START you should read the Blokus Basics section.  The ABSOLUTELY MOST IMPORTANT thing you need to know to begin learning about Blokus is the piece names.  You can read about them in the Blokus Basics section – HERE.

If you have a topic you would like me to blog about (or if you have any other general questions or comments), please post a comment here, and I’ll do my best to answer it or blog about it.

    Hi,
I’ve been trying to find Blokus Trigon everywhere on the internet but it’s out of stock on every single site. Do you know where I can find it?
    Thanks!

You’re looking for the board game Blokus Trigon? Mattel stopped making it, which is why it’s out of stock everywhere (sad, I know!).
Depending on where you are, I’d look at some local games stores and see if they still have old copies, but it gets harder and harder, and you might just be out of luck. You can probably still get some copies on ebay, craigslist, or other second-hand websites.
      Good luck!

The online game blokus has some programming problems. Sometimes when you win well it ranks you second or third. Do you know the how to get it fixed?

Sorry, I don’t know what online game you’re talking about. Can you tell me what site or app you mean?

Pentolla.com is much better for online blokus!

My daughter and I generally play the classic 2 player blokus (C2). We’ve recently taken to inventing variants. Our first variant was to have each player randomly select six pieces from a “neutral” third color and take turns distributing these around the board randomly, but generally evenly distributed. These initial “obstacle” pieces do not touch one another. We then play a normal C2 game having to work around the obstacles.

We’ve also, to introduce some randomness, tried a variant in which you role a normal d6 at the beginning of your turn. Using a “neutral” third color, the O is placed in the middle of the board and if you roll a 1 or a 6 you have to play from that third color, off of the center piece. Rolling a 2 – 5 means you play from your tiles normally from your starting corner. If you’re unable to make a legal move using a tile from the obstacle set, rolling a 1 or a 6 means that you simply lose your turn.

I’m interested in other variants folks have thought of to keep the game fresh when you find yourself always playing the same opponent.

Those are interesting ideas! Sorry about being slow to comment, I’ve been too busy lately :(.

You mention that when you’re playing with 2 players, there are “neutral 3rd colours”. Have you tried the “classic-2” variant where each player controls 2 colours (so all 4 colours are in use)? I find this a very diverse game, even when playing the same player many times.

Also, you might have fun checking out pentolla.com to meet some new opponents and get new ideas!

There’s a thing called Barasona opening and I can’t find images for it. What is this and how beneficial is it?

I have seen mention of this somewhere before (on another forum), but I don’t really know exactly what it is (or, more importantly, where it got that name, or how official it is). No one in the serious blokus community takes this opening seriously. Also from what I do know (from descriptions I’ve seen of it), it’s not very good. I wouldn’t think anymore about it.
